So. How much memory do you need in a PC?

Postby Burgerman » 08 Apr 2022, 20:55

Most experts will say it depends on usage.
Win 10 or 11 needs a minimum of 4GB to run.
But double that to 8GB to run properly once you run a few things at once. So 8GB is really fine for light use or web browsing/office.
Most would say 16GB is a luxury that is seldom used. And not really required.

I would disagree, at least for my purposes. In the screenshot below I have a laptop with a huge 32GB of ram. I am running a YouTube vid, with another one paused. And at the same time downloading a copy of this website from my server, and also updating the "snappy driver installer". So nothing really intensive. Just 4 light activities. When I opened the image editing software for the screenshot below it went up to 18GB used.

And I am already using around 16GB (or half of my 32GB of ram!)
So I would suggest that 32GB is a minimum for me.
If you want to edit 4k movies for e.g, you will want 64 min to 128GB. As fitted to my new Desktop PC. Just in case.

Half of my 32GB laptop ram used up already with one active youtube window, and 3 simple background operations...

Now i have only 2 Gb.
It is likely to increase to 16 Gb.
My computer motherboard supports a maximum of 16 GB of RAM.

You mean you are using 2gb? Or you only have 2gb?

I am amazed windows runs properly if only 2gb installed. :o

What type of memory is it? Do you have any idea how cheap memory is today?

Get the right type but this is typical https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325137766354 ... SwDQJiUE-N

Your 18G used RAM is almost for temporary unused data (the OS have not wiped yet). If the laptop has double RAM = 64G, the used RAM might be 36G, depending on its running time. If the laptop has a half RAM = 16G, the used RAM might be only 9G. But the performance is the same in all cases. It's correct that 16G RAM is luxury for normal use.

True, but I am only doing 3 background minor operations. And one youtube video here! As an example. I dont have 20 or 30 firefox tabs open or a bunch of other things runnin at the same time... As I do have right now. So that was not a worse case scenario but a simple snapshot of "right now" at that moment. Yes there was just under 8GB in use, and another 8GB remaining cached in ram awaiting future re-use.

And this cached stuff sat in ram is there for a reason though. It allows me to go back to previous programs etc, that are already loaded in ram, instantly without waiting for them to load. So a much more responsive computer. Thats why they are not de-allocated in the first place. Windows uses your ram on purpose so you dont get to wait... And why having lots of ram is good if you have long uptime between reboots or are busy doing many different things on and off during the day. It makes it run fast. But yes it would "run" just the same but load stuff slower. 16GB is adequate and the ideal sweetspot for normal usage on a laptop.

But try doing for e.g, some 4k video editing (from my DSLR) and then even 64GB is inadequate! It starts lagging and skipping bunches of frames as you jump through to different timelines to edit. But you dont do that stuff generally on a laptop. I do however do so on my desktop PC. The footage from my quadcopter for e.g is also 4k. Even editing a bunch of raw photo files from my DSLR can run up to much more than 16GB. Esp if upscaling or batch editing files. But I am generally doing that stuff too on my desktopPC with a lot more ram, and much better bigger screen. So here a lot of ram is essential. Even 32GB isnt enough really. But adequate. 64 (or up) can help. Depending on what you are doing.

8GB is adequate sensible laptop minimum for surfing, email etc. And can do most things. My ex gf manages fine with 8GB in her laptop as she thinks a computer is just a phone and a shop so 8GB is overkill.

4GB and windows will boot up, and use 2GB and a bit. Leaving almost no room for you to load or run anything much. So not really enough for even light use without slowing. Even with SSD as swap file.

How the hell does Martin007 manage to run windows with 2GB???

I opened a DSLR camera picture. Just 1. Nothing else of any consequence running. Just a youtube news live-stream.

So I upscaled 1 single photo, because it allows a better "de-noise" result. So then I tried to run the de-noise AI algo on it.

I cant even edit ONE upscaled photo on a 32GB laptop! Yes I could try again with less upscaling. Or swap file enabled. But thats slow and wears out SSDs faster. But sometimes more memory is needed.
It all depends what you are doing exactly. But 64GB and up is pretty much needed if you do a lot of this kind of thing, or 4k footage editing.

Here's my main PC with 64GB RAM...

mem.jpg

2 of my other PC's have 64GB and my Gaming PC has 128GB. Windows 10/11 needs at least 8GB to be usable, but 16GB is better. My Server PC has 16 running WS2019 Standard and it runs perfectly.

That capture corresponds to Linux Mint 64 bits.
I´m checking the resources that Linux consumes.
Ubuntu consumes even more... banghead
I have to try Debian. :computer

Until December I was using Windows 7 (32 bits).

What are the specs of your PC Martin? :problem: Why not run LTSC2021? It can be free if you know where to look! ;)

Download whatever version of windows you want. From many sources. Then PM me and I will give you a simple 2 click crack. It also makes any version of office such as the best one, office 2019 exec corp and office project 2019 etc "legal" at the same time.

JUST LIKE THIS ON: LTSC Windows 64 corp. Any modern era windows.
