The buttons (the conductive side of the physical button) are ok.
It seems to be a design fault (component failure) as a have a few more boards with the same problem. Although the circuit traces of the buttons have conductivity it seems that in some place is broken. No idea how to fix this, yet.
Usual reason is oxidisation of the pads that the conductive button presses on to. tho a test probe shows connectivity, the probe is puncturing the oxidisation, the button can't so doesn't work. The solution is a hard pencil rubber/eraser - just rub over the contact pads till they are shiny. Don't use anything abrasive like emery paper, but a squirt of contact cleaner can help remove the oxidisation layer.
