Zoom Chair

When I was over at the other wheelchair site, I noticed someone posted about a new offroad chair. Here are a few details for anyone interested:

http://zoomability.com/zoom/

- LiFePo4 powered
- Advertised 12.6mph speed
- 4 x 1kw motors (4WD)
- 25 mile "theoretical maximum" range
- 7" ground clearance
- 30" width
- 47" length (!)
- Cruise control (WTF?)

It looks nice, but is very focused on its outdoor role. Not suitable for home or in-town use. I'm also a bit skeptical about how those narrow tires would handle sand, mud and deep snow. Still, it does at least look like a bit of thought has gone into the design and it isn't just another "stair climber."

I sent the company an email asking about price a couple of days ago, but haven't heard back yet. I'll post when I know.

It's actually a tiller-steered, 4-wheel drive skooter, but to me looked pretty interesting. Certainly beats skid steer. Ciao, Lenny

Yeah, it's got a recumbent bike kind of vibe. Could be fun on forest trails and not-too-mushy ground. I'd have to get over my discomfort at riding around genitals-first, though.

I wouldnt be able to get in that though. I do wish that manufacturers and users would stop calling off roaders that plainly only work outdoors "wheelchairs". Its just a scooter/car/buggy. Theres thousands of them and everyone thinks they were first!

The designs also always assume you have an entourage. Things like "can be loaded into an SUV by just two people" and "just check it in at the airport with your hold baggage and pick it up from the baggage carousel." Sure, because I have a posse that travels with me everywhere I go, just to do the heavy lifting.

Well thats always the case with all these "off road" buggies. You need a truck to carry them and another wheelchair in case you want to eat or go to the toilet! And then some means of getting from one to the other. Thats why I build my do-all chairs.

All your complaints are so very true. But when you get it where you want, you certainly can have a hell of a lot of fun !!!!

Exactly. It looks like it would be a blast to zip (zoom?) around in. It's definitely something I'd like to rent for the day at a place suitable for riding. Something like the beach wheelchairs you can rent here in California. They're great if you don't have to worry about hauling them home afterward.
