Dump Load RIP

Postby expresso » 19 Feb 2021, 00:28

I went to use my Load Dump - didnt work - it was connected to 24V pack - so i guess its dead - - not sure how it dies but its not working

would anyone have a link to a compact one 24V 40A in that area ? i find larger ones - but dont have room to keep - a compact one would be nice if anyone knows where i can find one

thanks

It cant die without a huge show of heat and smoke and glowing!

You have messed with its wiring. You need to feed power in one end, have a connection that joins all the resistor connections in series, at the opposite end.

Post a picture... CLEARLY and not too close!

I had one of the ones that Burgerman uses and it died glowing white hot and then the coils melted
But I've had success with the one I've linked to, much quicker than dumping through a PL8

Did you import it Steve? The only equivalent I can find in UK is 800W/12v from Amazon:

Puma 40 backup, 73Ah MK (for now)

thanks for that link - i like that one even has switches to turn it off and on - do you have to connect those ducts ? or just if you want to direct the heat ?

i may order that one - its cheaper than any i found also - thanks

ok nice - its out of stock at that link here - i can find it on ebay - from China - if i want or wait and see if it comes back in stock

reading reviews on amazon - they all get bad reviews - is the wiring thick enough ? anything you dont like about it -

it looks great - with the switches - just connect and flip a switch - i may order that one - does the unit get hot to the touch - ?

how fast is that - how many amps is 2000 watts - either way - its much faster than pl8 for sure - good to have one

Watts = Volts X Amps, so 2000 Watts at 24V is a bit over 80 Amps. There are lots of similar heaters on Aliexpress, ranging from ca. 300 Watt to 2000 and for either 12V or 24V - just have to be prepared for the long shipping time from China.

yes thanks - is it wise to get such a high amp model ? 80A sounds like alot - what would you suggest - the one i had did about 40A -

there is no way to control how fast it works - ?

You see photo 1? Here? download/file.php?id=14996&mode=view

How is the electricity supposed to get across that gap? It is supposed to go down one spring and up the other...

JOIN those two terminals together with some cable. Then it wont be broken...

look at the other end - i never touched that end - it was always that way - i only connected the front where the wires are - and labeled 24V - thats very strange if thats the case - i will try that over the weekend - dosnt take much to cut a wire and connect it - but never done that before - it was always this way

look at the other pictures -

your saying connect a wire in both those holes - and it should work - i be surprised if it did - and why did it work before - never had a wire connected there

I dont care what you did, or what you remember. Theres no way for it to ever work if you do not connect those two terminals together! Logic. Reason. Electricity doesent do magic. It HAS to be connected in a complete circuit.

It goes like this. PLUS WIRE >>>>>> SPRING >>>>>> BIT OF CABLE TO CONNECT THE OTHER ENDS TOGHETER >>>>>> OTHER SPRING >>>>>> MINUS WIRE

There isnt another way!

then the springs inside are connected on the other end because i never touched that end before - there was never wires there - the way the picture shows is how it always was and worked

i have to check the other end maybe the springs are not connected there ?

I just did a real world test to be sure, I doubt the wattage figures are anywhere near accurate as I just ran my dump off my chairs charging anderson through a turnigy (it's supposedly ment to draw 1000w), volts = 26.2 and amps with one switch on <12a, with two on <24a so nowhere near 40a

ok thanks - so that can work with either 12V or 24V - one switch gives 12V - and two give 24V ?

does it work with 12V if you used it - just slower or dosnt work at all and need to use 24V ?

just curious - i like that item - if i get mines to work great - i will buy that one also anyway - i cant wait til it comes in stock - or have to do ebay china

Not sure about the 12V or 24V thing, the way I've got it connected the amps double when I turn on both switches which is a nice feature if you're working with differing capacities (Headways or Prismatic cells for example)

It does work on lower voltage (eg 12v) just runs slower and draws less

READ ABOVE!

Then read this.
I also connected a couple of fans. They run quietly. They remove the heat from those two coiled springs. Those are actually resistance wires, a special kind od wire designed as heating elements as used in kilns etc.

So now mine runs cool.

I added fans. Connected to the PLUS/MINUS end. These were once fans to cool PC memory, from an old PC. Re used. Now the thing stays cool. No danger of burning whatever its sat on. And in the background - you cant have too many PL8s...

mines had a fan installed - but did nothing not enough to cool it - the fan wires came out also - very thin wires - i use an external little fan - does the job - now look at your picture - show me the other side ? i dont see wires connecting the other side together in your picture either

DO AS I SAY!!!
The end you say you never touched? JOIN THEM TOGETHER.
Because theres no way that it could EVER work unless you do. Physics doesent do magic!!!

Mine are obviously connected together!!!

If you dont connect that other end together how in hell do you expect the electricity to get across and complete a circuit! banghead
You say you never touched it. But thats is literally impossible!!! It CANNOT work without the two joined.

show me a picture of yours - both ends the one you posted i dont see them connected either

but again - i never touched that thing - the picture is how it always was - so something else is connected on the other end which can on be the coils inside - i never had a wire connected on the other end before -

Trust me. You MUST have touched it. Theres no way for it to work unless those are connected. Mines in the garage, and I am in bed. So cant go look or take a picture.

But theres no need. I understand very well the sort of basic electrical curcuits we were taught in school when I was 11. :clap

Electricity need a cIrcuit right? Well, you dont have one!!! CONNECT THEM.

i trust you - just saying i never touched the other end before - so the coils inside must be connected on that end which makes it work closed curcuit - maybe the coil is not connected good on that end -

i will check it - tomorrow - i am not near it either - if thats the case great - i can add a wire there also - those coils must be the issue - they either came loose - cant be anything else

I can see from the pics that they are completely disconnected. Both sides of that connector can be seen in your pics. So no way on earth it can ever work. At all. In any way. banghead
