As far as I know, its all over here. So few actually dying or geting ill enough to go to hospital that its no different to flue in previous years. Everything open, no lockdowns, no problem. The actual infection rate is huge. We no longer care.

Mostly its the unvaxed that suffer. Theres few of those here. Its around 80% vacinated. Many are on the third one. Most of the unvaxinated are kids.

Anything else you hear is really nonsense.

Italy is in about the same situation as Great Britain. With about the same population, we have had 46 deaths, all elderly and un-vaccinated, and ca. 9000 new cases. There are a substantial number of new cases every day, but most are simply taking it easy at home. We have 83% of the 12 years old and over vaccinated, and 77% of the total population.

However, there is reason to not be complacent. Hospitalizations are again going up. In other words, the virus is still decidedly in circulation and as long as that's the case it WILL mutate and one of those mutants MIGHT turn out to be more infections, or escape the vaccine-raised defenses, or cause more serious illness even if it isn't easily transmitted. If governments keep opening things up prematurely (e.g. Germany and the Netherlands both with too few people vaccinated), and as more people actively rebel against restrictions and vaccine mandates (some parts of Italy), we are likely to see new waves of infection and increased risk of being faced with a breakthrough variant, a risk that will be there as long as the virus, not just serious illness, isn't essentially wiped out.

Never mind taking it easy at home, I have had 3 carers and my cleaner that all have tested positive on different occasions and were completely unaware. I have likely had this too from one of them, but never tested. No symtoms at all...

So yes its likely there will be a new variant. Its a matter of when.
