Ripple or alternating air cushions

Postby stevelawiw » 14 Jul 2014, 16:30

Has anybody tried an alternating air or ripple cushion with a power wheelchair? I've been using one for several weeks now and it's getting to be something I don't want to be without, it's very comfortable, I get no spasm and I can drive long distances without worrying about not lifting to relieve pressure. The cushion is mains powered so I have a 24 – 240v inverter (a pure sine wave 600w model) which has the added bonus of a usb port so I can charge my phone from it.

I've seen them and thought they looked like a neat idea, but never tried one... Biggest reason being that I'm told they cost really outrageous amounts of money, so they only get prescribed for folks that seriously need them...

My biggest concern is what happens if you have a leak, power goes out, or there is some other failure? I think this is one of the biggest problems with the ROHO cushions - a leak leaves you sitting on the seat base with no padding. I would be very nervous about any cushion that didn't have at least some sort of padding that would be tolerable by itself....
