Suzuki Wagon R Drive from wheelchair or powerchair disabled
adapted car
The Suzuki Wagon R is a tiny
"save the planet" zip up type of car in the same way you wear a zip up coat....
And it has about the same interior space. There are a couple of companies
converting these now.
Its not for me, that's for sure! But if you are a girl or
particularly want a tiny (but slightly embarrassing from a male perspective) car that you can drive from
a wheelchair then this one certainly fits the bill and may be attractive too
you.

|
Personally
I am amazed that its even possible to adapt it to allow this to be
done!
It certainly should be easier to park and do much more to the gallon than my
more normal wheelchair van.
Remember though that there really isn't much extra space. Look at
the image opposite.
A power wheelchair *just* fits. Where will you put the shopping
you just bought?
The front passenger seat looks like the only option since you
just drove through the complete rear end...
So if its just social transport you need and you need to park in
tight spots and are worried about saving the planet or fuel costs then this
could be the vehicle for you.
Although I suspect you would be better off buying something a
little bigger. Because although its tiny and short you cant actually *use* its
short length for parking, because you cannot really park in a small gap in the
street. If you do then you also need room to extend the rear access ramp.
So in fact my bigger
Voyager / Dodge / Chrysler van
is actually a fair bit shorter with the advantage that I can also use the side
opening ramp onto the road or the pavement. With a rear ramp someone can park
behind you.

Of course the
Chrysler has the
opposite problem and in a normal disabled parking place in the local supermarket
car park someone can park right next to you and then you cant get back in. This
requires careful strategic parking at the end of a row or across two parking
bays to ensure no problems! And its more expensive in fuel and purchase price.
But I still think it has advantages. Not least in the proper
boot/trunk space and a normal rear seat and enough space inside to turn and exit
the vehicle forwards. Plus of course you have room for the groceries as well as
4 other passengers and a couple of extra wheelchairs and the kitchen sink if
needed.
Access to the Suzuki Wagon R drive from wheelchair vehicle is much the same as
most new disabled adapted cars. You press a button on your key fob, and the door
opens, ramp is deployed and in you go! Turn the key and drive away.
